30. Crystacian

Contrary to how this appears, I actually put a lot of work and effort into this. It is a prime example of how watercolors really kick my ass.

This is a commission for Anarchpeace of her character named Crystacian. She's a really lovely character and this is the third time I've drawn her, I think. She asked for a badge so I decided to watercolor it! I hope she likes it, even though I was hoping it was going to turn out better.

So I did learn some things from it. Masking fluid is really cool. However, it is both very amazing and also very evil. I masked the background originally to shade Crystacian in the watercolor. I used a little bit of acrylic in the hair and some color pencil too (which isn't as painfully obvious in real life as the scanner has made it here). Once I finished the character, I waited for her to completely dry and then put masking fluid on top of her edges so I cold do the background. I put some masking fluid on parts of the BG too, to make cute little designs.

Everything was fine until I started taking the masking fluid off. It took my shading from Crystacian with it! As if I had erased her at 50% opacity or something. So there is shading in the hair, the neck scales, and on the face (and ear fin) that is just gone. . . and I couldn't really put it back on without destroying the ballpoint outlines. Then on my little designs in the BG, taking the masking fluid away tore the surface layer of the paper off.

I mean it still looks alright but it was extremely disappointing. I wonder if I should try a different masking fluid.

Anyway. I still learned a lot from this and am pleased with the outcome. It actually looks a lot nicer in real life (as usual) and the little gold outline around Crys is sparkle-shiny. Cause you know I have to add glitter to all my art. What else am I going to do with 88 gel pens. . .
