Valter the Ugly by Shinerai Valter the Ugly by Shinerai

Description

I made another one of these already! Trying to make the habit to draw every night. I'm still not sure if these should go into my gallery (but not into featured) or into scraps. Do you watch or look at artists' scrap folders?

Either way, I'm still feeling a bit rusty, so I'm happy with this but not happy with this. At least it's something! this one is Valter for Shinedriger. I hope you like it! I really tried to capture his 'bony' and 'swayback' features.

Such an interesting creature! :) Really like his design and the way you've drawn him!
as for the scraps folder I've never really ventured there, or put anything in there myself :/

Thank you very much! I'm glad you like the way I drew him! And I'm with you there - I try to watch scraps but I never go there to look for things :c

This thing hrer reminds me of my grandmother's dog. So ugly that she's pretty, in her own way and after a good bath and shave :XD:

I love seeing sketches and stuff one would normally find in an artist's scrap folder!

Does it have a habit of eating anything that comes close or is it more docile?

Valter is actually really sweet and very lonely, but he does have a deadly gaze and a ridiculous appetite, so he has a tendency to desertify whole areas just by inhaling everything near him. It doesn't make him hugely popular. At least his eyes are covered by his long hair, and his head is really heavy so he can't lift it that easily to actually kill everything he looks at, albeit by accident.

It's easy to understand why he's not hugely popular company... Kind of a sad character, there.
Though, does he have to look you in the eyes or just in one's general direction?

He'd have to look someone in the eyes. It's why his hair is so useful in that regard.

Does he in other ways sense other nearby beings and his general surroundings, then, if his eyes are so often covered? Good sense of smell and hearing?
And I suppose he could be best friends with someone without eyes. :P

I imagine he has a good sense of smell, though his hearing abilities are probably about average. He doesn't have any external ears (probably just ear-holes SOMEWHERE on his head).

I had thought about that tbh, or just someone who was blind. Then they couldn't judge him for his appearance either.

I'm not really sure! According to the reference, his gaze can kill anything! Maybe Shinedriger can answer the question c:

if someone is among my favs (which you definitely are haha) i always look through their stuff (PAUSE- that sounded hella creepy lmao) be it full pieces or bits here and there tho i tend to forget the scraps section exists
you could always put up sketch dumps too. sometimes it can be helpful to see multiple pieces side by side and compare what you did in them.
and i love this- creepy when you look close but somehow still looking approachable

Thanks for the compliment and for the feedback! I don't think you sounded creepy. I think I'll keep the sketches in the gallery folder and I'll spiffy them up with some CSS and colors! c:

Cute. Something that could have benn born from Spirited away. What color is this guy? Any name for the species as a whole?

He's actually not a species, just a random monster design I thought up at work one day, tbh, though he is inspired by catoblepas and yaks.

oooh, what an interesting character

Personally, I don't care where people put things. These may not be finished pieces (like your other recent stuff), but they're still not something I would consider scrap material

It took me a moment to notice the eye, and then I realised what I was looking at, Shinedriger has come up with a really cool design for this guy!

I love seeing sketches and watch the scrap folder of EVERYONE just for this reason.
I know how you feel though! I usually prefer to stick everything in a sketchdump so things feel a bit more finished or something (even though I never post sketchdumps anyway), a weekly sketchdump could be an idea if you are worried about your gallery filling up with smaller pieces, but personally I love seeing these.

thank you for the compliments, beb, and for the feedback! Even though I like sketchdumps, I think my gallery tends to be too empty and my posts too infrequent anyway, so maybe it could use the extra fill ;u; And I can put them in my gallery folder with colors and CSS! that would be nice.

I always watch people's scrap folders in case they post otherwise hidden gems there.

My two cents would be to post finished sketches that you don't plan to continue in your main gallery and then put the WIPs in the scraps folder. I still think it would be a shame for people not to get a chance to see these. If need be, throw them in a sketch folder.

And Valter isn't ugly, he's just differently attractive.

What I love about this piece is the subtle illusion. For the first minute of staring at the character I thought he had a very long neck and a rather sweet muzzle at the end. I thought myself that he was weird more than ugly.
Then I noticed the eye where the mane parts... and the mouth below.
Its very clever, reminds me of those creatures that lure prey in under a disguise of sorts then eat them.

(Also, I watch the scraps folder. :) )

I really like that aspect of this character too! I have a species in my headworld that employs similar tactics - you can see some old drawings of them here, here, and here.

What I do is make a favorite of a piece that I like to remind myself to return in the future to see the newest work. Also, in my opinion, this "Valter the Ugly" is a valid piece of art as it stands: a more finished piece would not show the pentimento, which can show how a piece develops and the way the artist thinks. So, for your question if I look at a person's scrap folder, I'd say it depends on the artist. YOURS, I'd look at. Too, don't call it a scrap folder (sounds a tad negative); call it a WIP folder. Thanks very much for sharing.
