So! Here is my [slightly late] submission to my newly revived art exchange --> :iconshinxchange:
This month I got =wispywaffle and I was able to draw her character, Wispy! I think I bit off way more than I could chew but it was a really nice challenge c': I tried my best to stay accurate to her design but I may or may not have accidentally changed some things. For that, I apologize. This is also the first time I've done a major background and the first time I've gotten to test my little painty style with a fullbody dragon. It took. A. Long. Time. Maybe that's just because I hand painted all the fur.
I struggled really really badly on those trees. |: But for all the effort I put into it, I'm relatively pleased with the outcome. Any critique on this is absolutely welcomed because I seek improvement.

A biggerish version is available for download.

P.S. Feel free to check out the #ShinXChange. I am in the process of reviving it, so the only exchange held is currently a quality controlled one. Please read all of the information in "How to Join" before applying. Please do not apply if you can't handle critique or if you can't handle being turned down. And please do not take anything personally.

Soon, I hope to host jams, a contest, and sketch exchanges c:

I started this off as a comment, but I'll sandwich it in as a critique (my first!) since it was requested.

The fur is the best part. The time and effort spent on the feathers and hair really show through. It's best viewed at the highest resolution! I agree with you in thinking that the overall image suffers because of the background, and unfortunately it's a difficult thing to accurately critique since there are a lot of different approaches when it comes to landscapes.

I think your biggest issue is the transition from sea/river to shore. The reflections are loose and inaccurate, and the water is flat and uninteresting. You want to try to have a seamless blend between the landscape and the water, and that means enhancing some of the detail and contrast in those areas. What this actually means in practice is up to the artist's discretion. A big part of it is time as well; since you spent so much on the subject it's hard to justify spending even more time on the background.

The trees aren't that bad at all. From height it's hard to tell them apart anyway. Similar to scales or fur, you can put in as much or as little detail as you want, as long as the implication of the landscape is there (the landscape's anatomy, if you will). You've done some of that with the lighting, but the structure could be emphasized further in and around the areas of interest.

Clouds are notoriously difficult to paint, but a big thing I learned when trying to paint them is that they are not just white but are in fact blends of all sorts of interacting illuminations. These include sources from overhead, from other clouds, and from the land beneath. Time is a factor so I understand this was not your primary focus with this piece.

Overall, fantastic work! I love seeing your dragons, and a background is icing on the cake. I look forward to your next piece.

The dragon itself is wonderful and whimsical, everything down to the expression, posture and coloring. Though the left wing seems oddly bent, it's hidden very well. (I didn't even notice till I looked at the background :P ) The detail is ridiculous. As in crazy so, I almost want to reach through my monitor and pet it! Also love the slight glow on the fur by the necklace.

The background as a whole is lovely and doesn't detract from the overall point of the picture (the dragon). But it does have some flaws upon closer inspection.

While the bottom right of the forest is filled with depth and shadow, it kind of blurs out as it goes to the left side, going from vibrant 3D to a more flat 2D look. This may be in part to how smooth the river banks seem.

I really loved the clouds though, mostly because the child in me loves how clouds sometime hide hidden shapes and maybe because I'm a deprived and lonely girl, I see at least 1 cat and a raccoon. Intentional or not that is really awesome.
